The Festival Houses
The events of the Salzburg festival take place here.
The festival halls nestles at the foot of the Mönchsberg mountain and form the centre of the so-called festival district.
From the outside they are recognized as an ensemble, one differentiates however the three buildings. The 'small festspielhaus', the 'large festspielhaus' and the 'Felsenreitschule'. The Felsenreitschule, which was built in 1693 according to the plans of 'Fischer von Erlach',forms the oldest part. In the years 1924/1925 followed the small festspielhaus, the large festspielhaus Clemens Holzmeister built in the time between 1956-1960. The small festspielhaus and the Felsenreitschule are being converted for the Mozart year 2006 and consequently are not fully operational due to construction work.
