Hellbrunn Castle
Enjoy sightseeing in Salzburg
Visit the picturesque palace in Salzburg. Hellbrunn Castle has one of the largest parks with gorgeous Renaissance grounds north of the Alps. The magic fountains will enchant your children and provide you with plenty of amusement.
Prince-archbishop Markus Sittikus gave the order to build Hellbrunn castle in 1612 - the castle was finished in a very short time. The prince wanted a residence with an Italian flair in the countryside, where he could enjoy himself with friends and family.
Hellbrunn Castle: water as the main element of design
Markus Sittikus loved Italian art and his Hellbrunn Castle was supposed to be in no way inferior to similar residences in Italy. He was especially fond of water and wanted it integrated in the park, making the gardens seem alive through the use of rivers and ponds. The magic fountains were to serve as an amusement for society at the court. Grottos, fountains and a water-operated theatre have been entertaining visitors from all over the world for generations.
Hellbrunn Castle: a maison de plaisance
The Hellbrunn Castle served more as a place for celebrations than as a place for living – that is why over the years more and more entertainment facilities were installed. The stone-theatre is one example and is one of Europe’s oldest open-air stages, where performances still take place today.
A unique atmosphere
Today the castle and its various attractions – the orangery, the stone theatre, the park and the ‘Monatsschlössl’ – can be visited throughout the year. It also serves as a venue for several markets, conventions, festivals, weddings and social receptions. One of the most popular things for families to visit in Salzburg is the Hellbrunn Zoo, which is located right next to the castle’s park.
