The Mirabell Castle was built in 1606 by the order of prince-archbishop Wolf Dietrich. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart gave one of his first performances in the marble room at Mirabell Castle with his father Leopold and his sister Nannerl. Today concerts still take place in the marble room.
Mirabell Castle: a gift of love
Wolf Dietrich gave the castle as a present to the love of his life, the bourgeois daughter Salome Alt. That is why he named the castle “Altenau”. However it was not allowed for a cleric to show his love to a beautiful Salzburg girl, so his rival and successor to the bishop’s throne, Markus Sittikus, extinguished the memory of Salome Alt by re-naming the castle “Mirabell”.
Stroke of fate causes new construction
On the 30th April 1818 a disaster hit Salzburg: a town fire destroyed Mirabell Castle – only the marble room and the marble stairway remained unscathed. The Viennese constructor Peter de Nobile rebuilt the castle, but by order of the Austrian emperor he did it without pomp and circumstance.

The Mirabell Castle, the Mirabell gardens and the popular marble room are perfect venues for all sorts of events. Today the castle also houses the mayor’s office and the city administration. In olden days the marble room was only used as a ballroom by the prince-archbishop. Today it is one of the world’s most beautiful wedding venues. The well-known and popular castle concerts also take place in the marble room.
