Mozart’s Birthplace
Visit one of the most popular sights in Salzburg
Mozart’s birthplace is located at Nr. 9 in the Getreidegasse in the centre of Salzburg. The Mozart family lived in this house for 26 years and the musical genius “Wolferl” was born here in 1756.
Today Mozart’s birthplace is a museum. The Mozart family lived on the 3rd floor of the house in the Getreidegasse from 1747 to 1773. Today you can see Mozart’s instruments and some of his personal letters; the furniture is also true to the original.
Mozart’s birthplace shows the life of the world-renowned composer over three floors
The house is also known as the “Hagenauer house”, named after the former owner of the house and friend of the Mozart family. On the third floor, on which Mozart’s flat was located, you will now find Mozart’s string instruments and the clavichord. There are three themed areas to explore:
- Mozart and the University of Salzburg
- Mozart’s friendships with other families in Salzburg
- Church music and veneration of saints
Mozart’s birthplace: second floor
The 2nd floor is all about Mozart and the theatre. Amongst other things you will be able to see the history of Mozart’s operas. Stage models from the 18th to the 20th century help to illustrate the exposition.

On the first floor special annual Mozart exhibitions take place under the direction of the International Mozarteum Foundation, which also owns most of the items exhibited at the Mozart museum.
