Mozart’s House in Salzburg
Visit Mozart’s residential home
The house, in which Mozart lived with his family for seven years, is now a museum and an exhibition venue about the Mozart family and the history of the residence.
The Mozart residence is located at Nr.8 on the Market square, opposite the Salzburg regional theatre. The Mozart family lived there between 1773 and 1780 in a spacious apartment. The distance between this house and Mozart’s birthplace is only a few hundred metres.
Mozart’s house – a venue for aristocratic dance lessons
Mozart’s residence is also known as the “Tanzmeisterhaus”, because the house’s earlier role was as a dance school for aristocrats. The director of the school was Lorenz Speckner, who was a groomsman at the wedding of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s parents.
Masterpieces composed in Mozart’s house
In this house Mozart composed some of his most popular masterpieces. Symphonies, serenades and concerts for piano and violins were all composed here. Two of the most important works he wrote here were “Re pastore” and “’Idomeneo”.
Destruction during the Second World War
The Mozart residence was destroyed during a bombardment in the Second World War. In the following days half of the house was used as an office block but in 1989 the International Mozarteum Foundation bought the whole building and reconstructed it according to the original plans.
