The Salzburg Festival: tradition and news
The first Salzburg Festival took place in 1920 with the world premiere of Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s masterpiece “Jedermann” on the Domplatz, directed by Max Reinhardt. This play has been performed yearly ever since. Over the years other spectacular performances have taken place, like Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”.
Enjoy the classical event at several venues in Salzburg’s old town
The baroque architecture in Salzburg serves as wonderful scenery for the performances during the Salzburg Festival. The so-called “Festival borough” initially served Archbishop Wolf Dietrich as his home. It was not until the 1820s that this place was used as a venue for performances.
The borough houses
- The festival hall “Festspielhaus”
- The Mozart house “Haus für Mozart”
- The “Felsenreitschule“
- The Dome square “Domplatz“
- The councils “Kollegienkirche”
Within the scope of the Salzburg Festival there are tours through the festival borough, where you can see scenes and costumes used in the festival, all year round. For those not lucky enough to get tickets to the Salzburg Festival, there are large screens on the Kapitalplatz, where the performances are broadcast.
